Household Hazardous Waste

How are you disposing of your Household Hazardous Waste? Pouring chemicals down the drain, dumping them on the ground or putting them in your trash is dangerous and illegal. Austin and Travis County residents can drop off their hazardous materials at the City of Austin's Household Hazardous Waste Facility -- it's the right thing to do and it's easy.

The facility is located at 2514 Business Center Drive. Austin and Travis County residents can drop materials off from noon to 6 pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  The facility is also open on the first Saturday of each month from 7 am to noon.

To get to the facility from downtown, take I 35 south to Ben White. Go east on Ben White and make a right hand turn on to Burleson Road. Do not curve left on Burleson, but continue straight on to Todd Lane. Business Center Drive is the first right. The facility is the second building on your right.

You can leave the items in your car and drive up for friendly service. They take paint, oil, household chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, cleaners, household batteries, car batteries, aerosol cans and pool chemicals. They do not accept radioactive material, biologically active materials, ammunition, explosive materials or any waste generated by a business.

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility will dispose of up to 30 gallons of hazardous waste generated in the home free of charge. If a resident brings more than 30 gallons of hazardous waste, they may be charged at cost for the disposal of the extra waste. The cost of disposal varies, depending on the material. However, the cost is sometimes greater than the original purchase price.

Please do not bring items in containers with more than 5 gallons of capacity.

You can find more information about hazardous waste and its disposal on the city's website.  If you have any questions you can call the facility at 974-4343 or you can call the County's coordinator at 854-4496
