TRAVIS COUNTY, TEXAS - The purchase of over 2,400 acres of pristine parkland, open space and reserve land in western Travis County with almost 3 miles of continuous frontage along the Pedernales River occurred November 29 and 30, 2005 with the park to open to the public on December 1, 2005 at sunrise. This is the largest parkland acquisition in the history of Travis County. Gerald Daugherty, Travis County Commissioner, Precinct 3 said, “The purchase of the Milton and Joy Reimers’ Ranch and Pogue Springs Preserve to create a park and open space is a great example of people and county government working together to satisfy a vision of Southwest Travis County that was forged through a dialogue among diverse stakeholders.”
The Reimers Ranch parcel is already well known and well loved by many potential park users. The sizeable Central Texas rock-climbing community views Reimers Ranch as a destination with world class rock climbing. The active local mountain biking community likewise enjoys Reimers Ranch’s over 18 miles of trails through the classic Central Texas landscape. Local anglers have come to Reimers’ for generations to fish for white bass in the Pedernales River. The Pogue Springs Preserve/Hogge Reserve component of the land acquisition is less known but equally spectacular with Pedernales River frontage, deep canyons and panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country.
Milton and Joy Reimers, known to many as the owners and operators of Reimers Ranch, have operated the Reimers’ property, overlooking the Pedernales River, as a family run private park. For more than a century, the Reimers’ family has been stewards of this pristine slice of Hill Country landscape. Travis County Milton Reimers Ranch Park is approximately 30 miles southwest of Austin. Take Highway 71 west of Austin through the town of Bee Cave and turn left onto FM 3238 (Hamilton Pool Road). Once on Hamilton Pool Road, travel 12 miles to the Park entrance, on your right.
Travis County will begin operating the new park on December 1, 2005. Travis County Milton Reimers Ranch Park will mirror the operations of the other parks within the Travis County park system. This includes the rules associated with the parks such as prohibiting glass containers, ground fires, fireworks and firearms. The operating hours will also mirror the current operation of the park. The park will be open Thursday through Sunday, sunrise to sunset until December 31, 2005. On January 1, 2006 the park will be open 7 days a week, sunrise to sunset. The park will be a full service park, staffed to insure the public safety, cleanliness and preservation of natural resources continues. A day use fee of $8.00 per vehicle will be in place at the park effective January 2, 2006. The Travis County Commissioners Court approved a waiver of the day use fees associated with the park until January 1, 2006 to allow the public to enjoy the new park.
