Colorado River Corridor Plan

What is the Colorado River Corridor Plan?

Travis County and the City of Austin (COA), with technical assistance from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) are interested in planning the future of the Colorado River Corridor within their respective jurisdictions. The area of interest covers over 30,000 acres in eastern Travis County, bounded by US 183 on the west, east to the Travis County line with Bastrop County, and by FM 969 on the north to State Highway 71 on the south.

Who Adopts the Plan?

The Travis County Commissioners Court will consider adopting the framework plan as a blueprint for the next twenty five years specific to the long-term restoration and reclamation of mining sites within the area, including potential roadway changes, new parks, open space and greenways.

Why prepare the Colorado River Corridor Plan?

Planning will guide environmental protection and orderly transitional growth in the area, which may be impacted by mining operations along the Colorado’s riparian corridor.

What are the Plan Objectives?

  • Evaluate the potential development patterns and transition of land uses over the next 25 years.
  • Develop conceptual plan for orderly and compatible development in phases of 5, 15, and 25 years.
  • Develop standards and protocols for the mining and reclamation of mining sites, including integration into open space and greenway systems
  • Develop standards for modification and restoration of flood plains to their proper function
  • Develop and evaluate programs and incentives for the creation, preservation and maintenance of open space and wetlands
  • Assess the impact of sand and gravel mining on ground water supply, ground and surface water quality, air quality, and noise.
