Rapid Vehicle Registration Renewal Processing Streamlines Customer Service

Beginning June 1, the Travis County Tax Office will be transitioning to a new vehicle renewal system that will change the way mail-in vehicle registration renewals are processed. The current processing system returns the original renewal notice and the proof of insurance to the vehicle owner along with a new sticker. The new processing system will mail the sticker, and all other documents will be destroyed. Vehicle owners providing proof of insurance should retain their original documents and mail a copy

"Returning every document increases postage costs and requires additional staff time. By mailing only the renewal sticker, we can assist customers more quickly and at a lower cost," says Bruce Elfant, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector.

Each year, the Travis County Tax Office registers over 820,000 vehicles and 130,000 of these registrations are processed by mail. "We know our customers might be surprised when they open their next envelope from us to find the documents are no longer being returned. However, streamlining the renewal process allows us to provide better service," says Elfant.
