ROSEHILL CEMETERY OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED WITH
A TEXAS HISTORICAL COMMISSION MARKER

Manor, Texas ----The Texas historical Commission (THC) designated Rose Hill Cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery.  The distinction means the cemetery has been legally recorded through the THC’s Historic Texas Cemetery Program, an important step in ensuring its preservation.

The designation is reserved for cemeteries that are at least 50 years old and documented through the Historic Texas Cemeteries process to record their historic association and significance.

A dedication ceremony to commemorate this historic designation will be held at 10:30 am on October 23rd at Rose Hill Cemetery. In case of heavy rain a rain date has been set for November 13th at 10:30am.

Speakers and presenters for the event will include Laurel Nelle, Rev. Kent Bohls, Noel Roebuck, George Nelle, Darlene Engelke, Rev. August Hannemann, Barry Hutcheson (TCHC), Joan Wilson, and Mayor Joe Sanchez.

This designation is a tool that will increase public awareness of these important cultural resources.  Knowledge and education are among the best ways to guarantee the preservation of a historic cemetery.

This historic cemetery is being restored by the Rose Hill Cemetery Association and its members and volunteers. Tombstones include the names of Wehlmann, Grehl, Heinze, Schlosser, Goedel, Hohertz, Nystrom, Frerich, Meier, Nelle, Wentland, and Herzer. The cemetery lies about 2 miles northeast of Manor off hwy 290. Turn onto FM 973, go east 2 miles on FM 973, take a right on Johnson Rd., go east 0.3 mile, take a right on Rose Hill road, go 0.2 mile. The Cemetery is on the right. It is significant as the resting place of German and Swedish immigrants. The earliest death recorded is 1873. Anyone interested in the Rose Hill Cemetery preservation efforts is encouraged to contact Rose Hill Cemetery Association President Mary Kay Herzer Hicks at to learn more.

Cemeteries hold valuable historic information and they are often the last reminders of early settlements’ historical events, religious beliefs, lifestyles and genealogy.   The THC developed the Historic Texas Cemetery designation to address the destruction of historic cemeteries and the illegal removal of cemetery fixtures.  Any individual or organization is eligible to submit an application for this designation.

For additional information regarding Historic Texas Cemetery designation, or to receive an application, contact the THC’s History Programs Division.  To find out more about historic cemetery preservation visit the THC’s web site at www.thc.state.tx.us.

The Texas Historical Commission is the state agency for historic preservation.  The agency administers a variety of programs to preserve the archeological, historical and cultural resources of Texas.
