AUSTIN, Texas ––The Texas Historical Commission has officially designated Austin Memorial Park as a historical cemetery. A dedication ceremony on the occasion of placing the marker authorized by THC is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. The Cemetery is located at 2800 Hancock Dr., Austin, Texas.
This dedication ceremony will be attended by, among others, Mayor Lee Leffingwell, council Member Randi Shade, and members of the Travis County Historical Commission. The Blanton Museum, which holds the Michener art collection, will be represented by Annette Carlozzi, Deputy Director of Art and Programs, and Jessie Hite, former Director of the Blanton, who was a friend of the Micheners. The Texas Military Forces Museum will provide an honor guard to present and retire the United States flag and the Texas flag.
Many Austin notables are buried in the cemetery, including
- author, James Michener,
- actor, Zachary Scott,
- several UT coaches,
- Veterans of every war from the Civil War to the present
The Cemetery has graves representing the diverse nature of the Austin community -- business leaders, university professors and administrators, and government leaders. In general, those interred at AMP cemetery indicate the diversity of Austin, with many races and religions represented.
The wording for the historical marker was written by the Texas Historical Commission after an application, accompanied by a history of the cemetery, was submitted to the Travis County Historical Commission by members of Austin RAMP (Rescue Austin Memorial Park). The research and the wording on the marker were approved by both the Travis County and the Texas Historical Commissions.
