Health and Human Services & Veterans Services
Chapter 72 Emergency Assistance Policy
Travis County Commissioners Court has approved a revised version of the Civil code “Chapter 72 Emergency Assistance Policy” that authorizes the Department of Health and Human Services & Veterans’ Services (HHS&VS) to help eligible Travis County residents with basic needs. The new policy will be implemented effective January 1, 2009. Travis County has provided this important service to low income families in our County since 1936. Chapter 72 sets the policy that authorizes County funds to assist residents with food, rent or mortgage, utilities, prescriptions, and emergency transportation. Other grant sources also provide funds for these services.
The Family Support Services division of HHS&VS is the largest provider of basic needs emergency assistance (rent/mortgage, vehicle emissions-related repairs, utilities, food vouchers, groceries, burials, transportation, prescriptions, clothes and blankets) in Travis County. Services are provided at 7 community centers - two of the sites are located in central Austin while the other five serve the rural areas of the County. The five rural sites provide eligibility screening for the Medical Assistance Program (MAP) and offer many co-located services such as clinics, WIC offices, senior lunch, and computers to support employment searches. All sites offer case management services.
