Mission Statement
To manage facilities planning, design, construction, maintenance, operations and leases effectively and efficiently to meet economic and functional needs of Travis County.
Travis County Facilities Management Department takes building projects from conception through planning, design, construction and provides ongoing operation, maintenance and repair services for all County facilities.
- Design and construction projects may address need for new or changed space to serve departmental reorganizations and expansions, or building maintenance and repair issues.
- FMD staff focus on keeping projects on-time, on-budget and on-scope.
- The FMD Real Estate Section handles land acquisition and lease management.
- Design phase work is either performed by in-house professional staff, or by architects and engineers contracted to the County.
- For lease space, design and construction services are usually provided through the landlord under terms of the lease.
- Designs are based on space programs, which meet FMD guidelines for fair and functional space.
- User department input is obtained during design.
- All Travis County facilities are designed to meet regulatory codes, including accessibility and life-safety standards.
- Designs must also meet FMD building standards to achieve cost effective long life.
- Commissioners Court approvals are required on larger design projects.
- Construction phase work on major remodeling or new construction projects is done by General Contractors selected through the formal bid process.
- Construction phase work on minor remodeling projects is done by General Construction firms under annual time-and-materials contracts with Travis County.
- During construction, FMD staff frequently visit projects for quality assurance.
- FMD staff represent the County during construction. All County decisions on payments, construction changes and contract issues are handled through FMD.
