Emissions Testing FAQ

More information from local, regional and national resources

In December 2002, Travis County, along with 11 other local jurisdictions, committed to take part in an Early Action Compact (EAC) with the State of Texas and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help meet air quality standards. As a result, multiple emissions reduction measures are being implemented throughout Central Texas in order to comply with the federal Clean Air Act.

Vehicle Emission Testing

In our region, vehicles are the main source of harmful emissions that cause lung-damaging ozone pollution. The emissions inspection is a key part of Central Texas’ plan to reduce air pollution and its negative effects on our health.

Dirty skies are more than just a nuisance. Ozone pollution can cause serious lung damage and difficulty breathing, especially among children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems. Emissions testing is one way to reduce pollution and help clean up the air.

The test is required for 2 to 24 year-old gasoline-powered vehicles registered in Travis and Williamson counties. You can have your vehicle tested at any participating AirCheckTexas station throughout the two counties.
